Harpur College in the '60s was so much more than sex, drugs and the Grateful Dead. I transferred in as a literature major from a state university in rural Illinois. It was a Father-Knows-Best kind of place with a repeat-after-me classroom environment. Harpur, on the other hand, was about questioning social norms and searching for what really matters in the world...

On campus, at some point a bunch of us would get together and buy a car. We'd chip in about 10 or 20 dollars a piece, and buy an old car. And if there was a girl in the group she'd get the insurance cause it was cheaper. And we would share the car, until it totally died. Then maybe we'd get another one, it worked great.
